Animal welfare assessment at a professional level requires more than a commitment to animal wellbeing — it requires the analytical frameworks, assessment tools, and communication skills to assess welfare systematically, document concerns credibly, and raise them through appropriate channels in ways that produce outcomes rather than discomfort. This module develops that complete welfare advocacy capability.

Covered across this module:
– Welfare assessment frameworks: the Five Domains model, the Five Freedoms, and quality of life assessment tools — their application in clinical, shelter, and working animal contexts, and how to select and use them appropriately for different assessment purposes
– Pain and suffering recognition across species: the behavioral and physiological indicators of pain, chronic suffering, and compromised welfare in different species — with attention to the species where pain recognition is most clinically challenging
– Professional welfare communication and advocacy: how to document welfare concerns in a format that is clinically credible, how to raise those concerns through appropriate professional channels, and how to navigate the organizational dynamics of welfare advocacy in environments where competing pressures exist
